Eukaryote cells. Artwork of a section through an animal cell (left) and a plant cell (right) showing their generalised structure. Eukaryotes are organisms whose cells are organized into complex structures by membranes and a cytoskeleton. The emergence of the eukaryotic cell was a major development in the evolution of life. Eukaryotic organisms developed around 2.1 to 1.6 billion years ago.2
